What's Next For Personhood In Mississippi?

With 58% of Mississippians voting against Initiative 26 on November 8th, what's next for Personhood in Mississippi? There were a lot of conflicting arguments in the final days leading up to the vote with many Pro-Life supporters saying the bill needed to be rewritten before they could support it. So what's next? Now that the Republicans have control of both the House and Senate, will we see a bill put forth for a vote? What should that bill look like? Or is this old news already and will we ever hear anything about it again?

I certainly hope we hear something about it again. It drove me insane hearing people say they were Pro-Life but couldn't vote yes. The bottom line is, when does life begin? If you believe that a fertilized egg (zygote) is a human life (which most scientists do), then you have to decide what is acceptable in supporting that life or terminating it. If life doesn't begin at fertilization, then when does it begin? Two weeks later? Two months later? Once the doctor is actually holding the baby?

Well BChris76, I happen to be one of those that is Pro-Life but voted no. The main problem that I had with it was that it would have outlawed most birth controls and made it nearly impossible for fertility treatments. I hope the state legislature brings it up because it does need to be addressed. I would love to see abortion completely banned in Mississippi (and elsewhere) but not at the expense of the many, many women that would have been affected if Prop26 has passed. There's a right way to do it and Prop26 wasn't it.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. I'm really not trying to be rude Holly but it sounds like you're not really Pro-Life. It sounds like you're Pro-Life unless it gets in the way of other stuff. As I previously stated, it all comes down to deciding the exact moment human life begins. To me (and science), it begins at the moment of fertilization. Once life has been created, then yes, some birth controls kill that life and, yes, some fertility treatments kill the human lives that they don't need. If you believe that human life begins at fertilization then those birth controls and fertility treatments should be banned. I'm sure that's a very unpopular stance but there's no grey area here. You're either killing a human life or your not. It's time for us to define when life begins and provide that life with the same protections under the law that everyone else receives.
