Is Social Security Still The "Third Rail" of Politics?

For those that aren't familiar with the term, the third rail in a railway system is the exposed electrical conductor that you certainly do not want to touch. In politics, the term "Third Rail" is used to reference controversial issues that would mean certain "death" for a political campaign. In U.S. politics, the term "Third Rail" is most commonly used when referring to the Social Security program.

Lately, we've seen more talk about the need to reform Social Security. Does this mean it's no longer the "Third Rail" or do you think there are still major repercussions for any elected official or candidate that would try to make changes to the status quo?

Social Security will remain the Third Rail of politics until the baby boomers start dying off and then it will probably be too late. They've been the largest voting block for decades and have cared about nothing else other than themselves. We hear all of this talk about doing this or that "for our children" or "our children's children" but baby boomers don't want to make any sacrifices at all even though they're the ones that have been letting politicians raid Social Security for years. The baby boomer generation has made it abundantly clear that they don't care what happens after they're gone. They just want theirs. It's amazing how the "greatest generation" could produce a generation of self-absorbed babies. Thanks for the bill, Mom and Dad.

I guess I fall into the Baby Boomer generation that you're talking about. I've been paying into Social Security my whole life. Why shouldn't I get my full benefits? The government has already reduced benefits and extended the retirement age several times over my life. They keep moving the finish line and now you think I should give up more? It has nothing to do with "not caring about what happens after we're gone". I have to live, too. The government has been taking from my paycheck just like yours. I think I deserve what was promised me all these years.
